Veeam® Disaster Recovery as a Service FAQs

Questions that will help you to choose right product for your growing business.
What is a disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS)?
Disaster Recovery as a Service is more than just restoring corrupted data files. It is leveraging a service provider to support the DR planning, testing and execution process. This includes sending replicas of your entire production environment and replicating them in a third-party, off-site location (often the service provider’s datacenter). When one of them fails —whether from a natural disaster, hardware failure or cyber-attack — they can be turned on at the third-party location. When the primary, production datacenter is back online, you can then failback to the main production site along with any of the data changes that took place during the failover period, ensuring no data loss. It is common for the service provider to help orchestrate the failover and failback process.
What is the difference between data backup and disaster recovery solutions?
Data backup preserves data copies for accidental loss, while disaster recovery encompasses broader strategies, technologies, and processes to restore systems and ensure business continuity after a disaster, minimizing downtime and enabling critical function resumption.
What types of disasters can Veeam Recovery Orchestrator handle?
Veeam Recovery Orchestrator can handle various types of disasters, including natural disasters like floods or earthquakes, hardware failures, power outages, cyber attacks, human errors, and software malfunctions. It is designed to provide comprehensive disaster recovery capabilities, ensuring business continuity and data availability in the face of diverse disruptive events.
What workloads do backup and replication protect?

Today, Veeam Backup & Replication protects all of the following workloads with Veeam Universal License (VUL):

  • Virtual: VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper‑V, Nutanix AHV and Red Hat Virtualization
  • Cloud: Workloads run in AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud
  • Physical: Microsoft Windows, Linux, Mac, IBM AIX and Oracle Solaris
  • Enterprise applications: Microsoft SQL, Exchange, SharePoint, Active Directory, SAP HANA, Oracle RMAN, MySQL and PostgreSQL
  • NAS file shares

The above features may have been licensed separately in the past but now with VUL, all of these capabilities are included with Veeam Backup & Replication at no additional cost, including the following installable items:

  • Veeam Backup for AWS and for Microsoft Azure
  • Veeam Backup for Nutanix AHV
  • Veeam Agents for Microsoft Windows, for Linux, for Mac, for IBM AIX and for Oracle Solaris

What is the most secure way to backup data?

Security is especially important when choosing backup solutions for businesses, since the data stored in your backups is a goldmine to your business. Unfortunately, it’s a goldmine to any malicious attackers as well. To keep things safe and secure, your backup solution should offer the methodology to:

  • Maintain three copies of your backups on two storage types, one of which is off site, plus  ideally one air‑gapped or immutable copy.
  • Prioritize sending and storing data in a secure and encrypted manner.
  • Provide the tools to test the security of your backup data post-backup and pre‑recovery.
  • Facilitate automated and regular backup testing.
How many licenses do I need?

Veeam Data Platform is licensed per supported workload. A workload can be a virtual machine (VM), physical server, cloud VM, enterprise application, NAS file share and more. With VUL, customers can use their licenses to protect any workload, since the licenses are portable. Most workloads require just one license instance- Virtual Machine – 1 license- Cloud Virtual Machine – 1 license- Enterprise application – 1 license- NAS/File Share – 1 license per 500GB capacity- Workstation – 1 license protects 3 workstations/endpoints- VUL licenses are sold in minimum quantities of 10 licenses. If the minimum purchase requirement of 10 licenses is a barrier, we suggest trying Veeam Data Platform Essentials™, which is sold in 5 license bundles, up to a maximum of 50 workloads for small business needs.
